Getting Started: Ken Wardrop’s tips for aspiring filmmakers

With a number of award-winning short film credits under his belt (his graduation film Undressing My Mother has become one of Ireland's most successful shorts ever, winning a European Film Academy Award in 2005) and the phenomenal success of his feature debut His & Hers, director Ken Wardrop clearly knows a thing or two about crafting a decent short.

So what advice would he offer to young filmmakers?

Here are a few helpful tips for budding filmmakers kindly provided by the man himself:

  1. The story is everything. A poor story equals a poor film.
  2. Tell a story about something you've experienced i.e. avoid guns etc
  3. Filmmaking is a team endeavor. Work with people that inspire you.
  4. Prepare meticulously or prepare to fail.
  5. Trust your own judgment.
