Spotlight on Jenny M, local singer / songwriter

Jenny M is an 19yr old singer songwriter from Dublin. She has been playing instruments, guitars & Keyboards, and writing songs for the last 3/4 years.

Jenny has performed on stage, (both solo and with band), several times this year in different venues including Whelans, (as support for Autumn Long), The Workmans Club at their 'What The Folk' night, The Stags Head as support for Carol Keogh and Lesley Dowdall and as a support act at the "One More Robot" Music Magazine launch in the Lower Deck in Dublin. Jenny has also performed at various singer/songwriter nights across the city.

Jenny has a fairly diverse taste in music with her influences ranging from Irish acts such as Gemma Hayes, Cathy Davey, The Riptide Movement and Damien Dempsey to acts such as Eddi Reader, Eliza Carty and Marina & The Diamonds or bands such as Florence and the Machine, Muse, Jools Hollands Rythmn & Blues Orchestra.

As Jenny's song writing matures, she deals with themes such as murder, love, loss and heartbreak influenced by both current events and some personal experiences.

Jenny has also participated in "Suburban Sounds", a songwriting and performance initiative run by SDCC which culminated in a number of live shows at The Ballyknockan Inn, (birthplace of The Knockanstockin Music Festival) and at Rua Red Arts facility in Tallaght, Dublin.

Currently doing a 4 year degree in Songwriting in BIMM (Bristol/Brighton Institute of Modern Music), Jenny hopes to get a band together and begin doing larger scale gigs in Dublin.

NOISE asked her a few questions about her experiences in music:

How did you first get interested in music?
I think I've always had an interest in music whether I knew consciously or not. From a very young age I loved pantomimes and musicals, not to mention singing along to music in the car! I also used to go to ABBA tribute gigs and dance in the aisle! It's always been a really big part of my life and I suppose I never pictured myself doing anything else.

What musicians are you currently listening to?
At the moment I'm listening to a whole range of artists because I'm being introduced to loads of different musicians in college. Florence and the Machine to Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen to David Bowie! I'm always open to hearing someone new because I love to hear other peoples styles.

Where are you gigging now?
In terms of gigging I usually do singer/songwriter nights in the city. I'm trying to get a band together at the moment so hopefully that will work out and I'll be able to do slightly more upscale gigs but they'll still be in Dublin for the time being!
